Stormsisters─Lips Accessorized

Far more than disappointing, it can often be a downright conundrum: What to do when your favorite lipstick is discontinued? Minnesota entrepreneur Becky Sturm simply rolls up her sleeves and makes her own. Sturm is the creator of Stormsister─Lips Accessorized (available at Uptown Minnesota on Concourse G), a line of vegan, cruelty-free lipsticks made from sustainable ingredients. Martha Stewart Living magazine recently named the line a 2015 American Made Finalist, a contest that honors innovative, handmade products manufactured in the U.S.A.

“When my favorite French lipstick brand announced it was pulling from the U.S. market, I bought 50 tubes,” says Sturm. “As my supply dwindled, I began to wonder what I was going to do.” Fortunately, she had a direct line to the beauty industry. Sturm is also the founder of 3way beauty, a combined shower/shampoo/shaving bar, and StormSister Spatique®, an online sustainable-beauty retail store.

“I grew up in the salon industry,” she says. “I come from a long line of hairdressers from my grandmother to my mother to my sister and me. I did hair for 25 years before I founded my businesses.”

Lipsticks, however, are different breed of beauty. To create Stormsister─Lips Accessorized, Sturm partnered with The Elixery, an artisan cosmetic maker based in Minneapolis. The initial line of 14 shades took two years to develop and manufacture. Each shade was chosen by and named after a significant woman in Sturm’s life. “Two are named after family—my grandmother and my sister—while others are local women who have been professionally supportive of me or women who I admire,” says Sturm.

Choose from “Helen” (a pinky beige), “Mary” (a frosted berry raisin), “Katie” (a warm, ruby red), and, of course, “Becky” (a tan mauve), among others. Beautiful to look at, they also feel and smell incredible, a condition Sturm credits to a blend of castor seed and coconut oils and a proprietary scent made with jasmine, cassis, raspberry, violet, and orange blossom. Hydrating and long wearing, the lipsticks are ideal for travel.

In October, Sturm will debut five new shades, each one, again, named after an important woman in her life—a list that continues to grow. “I’m a one-woman show when it comes to business,” she says, “but I have a lot of support from fellow female entrepreneurs. I have a lot of people cheering me on.”
